Tom Patterson: Tom is the co-founder of Tommy John, the men’s apparel brand he started in 2008 with his wife Erin Fujimoto after being laid off from a medical device sales job. He built it from patented “stay-tucked” undershirts sold out of his San Diego apartment into a nationwide brand carried by Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Dick’s, selling a stake to private equity along the way. He now lives in the Austin area.

Chandler Bolt: Chandler is the founder and CEO of selfpublishing.com (Self-Publishing School), which he launched in 2015 after dropping out of the College of Charleston. The company has helped thousands of authors write and publish books and has landed on the Inc. 5000 list multiple years running. He’s a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and the author of several bestselling books, including Published.

I’m sitting on a private jet with Tom Patterson and Chandler Bolt, and the obvious question comes up: when does this kind of spending actually make sense?

Once your business starts producing real money, the decisions don’t necessarily get easier. Do you keep pouring everything back into the company? Spend more to save time? Pay for experiences and access to better rooms? Or are you just copying the lifestyle of someone who’s ten years ahead of you?

We get into the tension between frugality and leverage, why entrepreneurs can spend years being able to afford something before feeling comfortable buying it, and how trying to look successful can actually hurt your credibility with the people you’re trying to impress.

We also talk about the role relationships and proximity play as you scale—and why being around people operating at a completely different level can change what you believe is possible.
